No joy from Weird Tales, which is to be expected. Not sure what to do with Reginald now.
So, Indigenous Species didn't make it. Apparently it was well received, but it wasn't funny enough. Buggrit.
When I get back to my place I'll look for somewhere to send it.
Absolutely no joy from Podcastle. Off to Weird Tales you go, Reginald.
Reginald didn't make it. He's now winging his way to PodCastle.
Infected Girl didn't make it into TBW. I'm not surprised, but I'm glad I've finally got confirmation. Time to rewrite it. Hardcore.
Very quiet on ye olde update front from me recently. I suspect that this is because I've been too busy actually writing and critting to write about writing and critting. This is a good thing.
Got a rejection from the Giant Creatures anthology. The editor thought that my story was well-written, but not B-movieish enough. I also got an invitation to resubmit.
So right now I'm combing my brain for better ideas. I also just sent off the rejected story to the Pit, so I should soon see what the good folks there make of it.
So, I didn't win anything in that competition, but that doesn't surprise me. I was trying to write in my second language, and I was up against real lit students. The free books would have been nice, but alas. It was not meant to be.
Tonight I sent off Stories My Dad Told Me Which May Or May Not Be True, which I am just going to refer to as Stories from now on because it's a bloody long title. It's for the Permuted Press giant creatures anthology, and I'm curious to see if I'll get rejected straight away. It's probably not what they were expecting from a tale with giant animals in it - or maybe it is. Who knows? Time will tell.
I got my tenth rejection today!
Well Told Tales got back to me very quickly after my query, saying that they thought LLS was well-written but just not their thing. Which is basically what I expected. I wasn't expecting them to compliment me on the writing, but I'm certainly not complaining.
I got lots of new books today. Most of them were for my uni courses, but me and teh_Mlijn stopped off at the book stores on the way back from uni. Marijn picked up some dictionaries (Arabic and Greek) and I picked up From a Buick 8 (a lovely hardcover edition) and Swamp Foetus. I've never actually read anything by Poppy Z. Brite except for her interesting and frequently entertaining blog, so I'm quite curious. I could have picked up Lost Souls, but vampire fiction generally doesn't do anything for me, so I figured I would be better off with her short story collection.
I have a job interview tomorrow, which is exciting. Especially considering that it's for a waitressing gig at a pancake restaurant - a few years ago, that is exactly the thing I tried for when I went for my very first job. Of course, I failed miserably then, so I'm hoping that I won't fair the same this time.
I would love to have a job. Not just because of the money, although that certainly makes it more pleasant. I just need something to do. The past few weeks have been very unproductive for me, mostly because I haven't had any real goals. Once my exams were done, I just started floating around aimlessly, doing passively entertaining things. I need actual goals to motivate me to do creative things.
I have taken a step in the right direction, though. Last night I started doing amigurumi again for the first time in almost a year. A friend of mine is having a baby next month, and I was discussing what to get the kid with Marijn. He said, well, why don't you just make the kid a doll?
So, I'm now in the process of making a stuffed sloth toy. Actually it's Captain Slossypants. It's a long and probably incomprehensible story as to exactly where the hell Captain Slossypants comes from, but I think everyone can appreciate the fact that a pirate sloth is one of the most awesome things in the history of ever.
Also: HISTORYYYYYYYYYYYY.
Less than 12 hours after sending it off, I got The Cape back from Podcastle. It was a rejection: the editor who reviewed it wasn't able to really engage with it because too much of the action was in the flashbacks.
This is, without a doubt, the most constructive criticism I've ever got. It's kickass.
I'm going to try to restructure it, so that it's in (roughly) chronological order, polish it up and send it off to Pseudopod, because it does contain elements of horror. Or did I already send it there? I'll have to check. My mind is like a sieve.
Thanks for giving me a look at "The Small Print." Though I enjoyed the story's concept, I'm afraid it's not quite right for Farrago's Wainscot .
First personal rejection evar!
Well, for fiction that is. I've had people say 'no' to me in real life. Bugger it, you get the idea.
Before I send TSP out again, I'm going to give it a considerable rewrite. My writing style has changed since I penned this, and it needs updating.
One thing I'm glad about is that someone else liked the story's concept. I was beginning to think that it was just me being unrationally proud of something I'd done.
OMG. I can't believe all the stuff that's been happening recently.
